PEC Quilt show, July 10, 11

The Prince Edward County Quilters' Guild Quilt Show.... Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 from 10-5, PEC Community Centre Fairgrounds

 

The Quilt Guild supports several programs in PEC which last year included the Food Banks in Wellington & Picton, PEC Pregnancy & Family Care Centre  and other needs in the County. In addtion 17 lap quilts were presented to the Dialysis Unit at PEC Memorial Hospital, and each year the Guild submits a tree to the 'Festival of Trees' fundraiser for the hospital. Many other 'comfort quilts' are provided to individuals or families in the community suffering life altering disasters.

About our Quilt Show:  You will find:

       ·    Beautiful quilts and wall hangings that will fill the Picton Arena.  Many quilts will be for sale

    ·        a boutique with quilt items for sale that have been made by quilt guild members

·        demonstrations of quilting techniques - new & old

·        a merchants' mall - beautiful fabrics and items for quilting ,sewing and needlework

·        a silent auction with items made by guild members

·        two featured artists – both Guild members who create, teach, judge & show in Galleries

·        judged competition of quilts and wall hangings

In 2008, over 1300 visitors attended the Quilt Show and marveled at over 260 quilt related items displayed in the arena.

The Show attracts other quilters, visitors who appreciate the many “Art Quilts” and many who fondly remember family members who quilted.  Quilts are a wonderful part of our history but they have become valuable works of art.

Cobourg Waterfront Festival taking place at Victoria Park at the waterfront

PORT MOODY ARTS CENTRE CALLS FOR WEARABLE ART AWARDS ENTRIES

PORT MOODY, BC - A call for entries for the 2011 Wearable Art Awards,

performances scheduled next February 18 - 19, has been issued by the Port
Moody Arts Centre Society which, with the support of our community and
corporate partners, offers $5,000 in cash awards.

The event generally attracts up to 100 entries from communities across
Canada, the United States and elsewhere. The entries will be shown by
models during two performances in the Galleria at Port Moody's Civic Centre
and then will be displayed at the Port Moody Arts Centre from March 3 -
April 10, 2011.

Jane Matthews, the Port Moody Arts Centre's Executive Director, said the
deadline for entries for this off-the-wall art event is December 10, 2010.
Entry applications must be submitted online at

The 2011 Wearable Art Awards will feature three categories - Open,
Headdress, and Brassiere. Prizes will be awarded in each of these three
categories, along with additional awards, as determined by the jury panel,
for: Second Life, Best in Show, Student participation, use of Technology,
Ethnic Expression, Material of the Year (paper), and "People's Choice", the
latter based on votes by the public at the awards performances and during
the following showing at the Arts Centre.

"This year categories are form-based while an expanded list of awards will
consider all entries," says Matthews. "Our jury will be weighting the
scoring when selecting category and award winners in favour of conceptual
message and wow-factor. We have also introduced a "Material of the Year"
award and for 2011 that material is paper. Through the expansion of our
awards we believe the event now appeals to a broader range of wearable art
designers."

The Wearable Art Awards, begun in 2002, are presented by the Port Moody Arts
Centre Society - with support from businesses and sponsors who currently
include the BC Gaming Commission, the Port Moody Arts Centre, the City of
Port Moody, and local companies Pasta Polo and Pacific Coast Terminals - to
encourage local, Canadian and International artists of all mediums to submit
evocative, imaginative and thought-provoking creations for the human body.
The imaginations of the participating artists are the only limits on
entries.

AL PARRISH

Al Parrish entered the world of folk/roots music in 1989, when he and three friends created Brean Derg Muc, a Toronto-based band that took the Ontario folk festival scene by storm during two years of brilliant success.  Following this he freelanced in Ontario and the Maritimes with The Barnstormers, David Stone, October Browne, Kirk Elliot, Aaron Solomon, Anne Lederman, Dave MacIsaac, Jamie Snider and many others.
Al then began a 17-year career with Tanglefoot, touring Ontario and then all across Canada.  In 1998 the band began playing in the US, and that summer made its UK debut. For the next 12 years, Al was on the road with Tanglefoot about 150 days a year playing dates in Canada, the US and Britain [including the prestigious ‘Whitby Folk Festival’ on the North Yorkshire coast!] In December 2009, the band played its final shows and disbanded.
Since then Al has been recording a solo CD, writing a memoire and a novel, recording voice-overs for commercial television and radio, video games and movies, & recently launching his solo musical performance career with several shows in the last couple of months, including an opening set for Celtic rockers Coole Park at their Toronto CD release, a concert for the Vital Spark Folk Club, and an appearance at the Jamland Festival.

On June 28th the Monday Night Series at the Playhouse in Gananoque kicks off with Chic Gamine.

They are 4 woman a cappella group accompanied by a really creative percussionist and they are amazing!

Their music, almost all written by members of the group, ranges from sweet harmonies (not unlike The Wailin' Jennys)

to funky R&B and Gospel to strong and powerful rythmic vocals. Plus they are gorgeous and they have a sense of humour!

Inspired by nature’s balance of opposites, Canadian artist Jennifer Noxon paints groupings of leaves, sticks, seed pods, stems and grasses as they sit suspended in water, fields or forests.

Exploring the realm of organic abstraction, Jennifer plays with two- and three-dimensional space, light and focus. Her passion for design and music is conveyed through composition, line, tone, rhythm, shape and colour.

Canada Day Marked In Grass Creek, Confederation Parks

Kingston's July 1 Canada Day celebrations are scheduled for Confederation Park and Grass Creek Park.

Red & White People Parade and Re-opening of Princess Street: Anyone wearing Canadian red and white is welcome to join this parade which departs from the Metro parking lot (at Barrie and Princess Streets) at 11:30 a.m. and runs down Princess Street toward City Hall.

Re-opening of lower Princess Street: Town Crier Chris Whyman will lead the Red & White People Parade down to officially re-open the newly reconstructed lower Princess Street. The re-opening is on-time and on-budget thanks to successful teamwork by Len Corcoran Excavating, City and Utilities Kingston staff, downtown merchants, Downtown Kingston!, council and Mayor Harvey Rosen who will be on hand to mark the occasion. Finishing touches to the project will continue into July.

Writer's Workshop and Public Reading with Helen Humphreys

In a few weeks time, award-winning novelist Helen Humphreys will be
offering an extended workshop at Wintergreen, beginning on Sunday July 4
and closing on Thursday July 8. This is a unique opportunity to explore
poetry and prose with other writers, and to learn how the land can
inspire new work and new ways of seeing.

Helen will also be offering a public reading on Tuesday, July 6. This

The Odds in Kingston!!

The Odds in Kingston Tuesday July 6 - one night only!!

 

Vancouver alternative rock legends The Odds have gotten together with their pals from Kids in the Hall, to create a Good Weird Story, a wild and hilarious concert/play about the band's storied 22 year history. When you spend over twenty years playing in a band, you pick up a few stories along the way. If there's a steady rise to fame, a mysterious hiatus, and a sparkling return there is frequently a good back-story.  Formed in Vancouver in 1987 The Odds had a great run with platinum albums and consistent critical acclaim. After four albums and hits like “It Falls Apart,” “Eat My Brain,” “Make You Mad” and “Someone Who’s Cool,” the band took a long hiatus to return in 2008 with the LP Cheerleader (the first album of new material since 1996's Nest). The recently reunited group then threw itself into a strange and exotic creative endeavour -- storytime theatre.

"I guess you'd call it a play," says Craig Northey, Odds' long-time singer and guitarist. "It's a narrative about our strange history. We weave these ideas and war stories between [performing] the songs. There are visuals too with a big screen running simultaneous photos, effects and clips. It all works together to take people on a different ride than that of a regular concert."

"The last thing we wanted was some dreary 20th anniversary run through the back catalogue. We wanted to get to the core of why we are still out there as a creatively vital band." Northey co-wrote the script with his long time collaborators Kevin MacDonald and Bruce McCulloch from comedy legends “Kids in the Hall.”  It's a hilarious and highly entertaining ride full of all the band's solid gold hits - an anthology, an autobiography and a concert all wrapped up in one.

    The band is in the Kingston area to record their newest cd at the Bath House Studio and will present A Good Weird Story for one night only on Tuesday July 6  8pm at the Octave Theatre. Tickets are available at Brian's Record Option, Renaissance Music, and The Kingston Guitar Shop.

With the new exhibit Fraternity by Kevin Rodgers (London, ON) minimalist sculpture becomes a platform for right-wing political pundits.  To create the sculptures, Rodgers uses inexpensive materials of composite form – boxes, shelves and stacked sheets – the same materials that are utilized in constructions of short duration such as conventions and weekend political retreats. Rodgers’ interest in collapse is pursued through the construction of these boxes and structures that are cut, stacked, packed and ready for shipment or recycling. The political paraphernalia that litter the exhibition, as Rodgers notes in his artist statement, provide “specificity, if not explication; context, if not revelation.”  Fraternity draws upon provisional formalism, conservative subcultures and the rhetoric of radical individualism to create an installation that specifically engages with campus politics.

Kevin Rodgers (London, ON) is a 2008 graduate of the master of fine arts program at the University of Guelph, and is currently a doctoral candidate in art and visual culture at the University of Western Ontario—one of the few programs of its kind in Canada. Rodgers has shown in several group exhibitions across Canada, the United States and Belgium, including shows at Galerie Tatjana Pieters, Ghent; Artspeak, Vancouver; Stride Gallery, Calgary; and recently at Goodwater Gallery, Toronto.

The Isabel Bader Fellowship in Textile Conservation

 

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre, in partnership with the Queen’s University’s Master of Art Conservation Program, congratulates Caterina Florio, the inaugural recipient of the Isabel Bader Research Fellowship in Textile Conservation.

 

The Isabel Bader Research Fellowship in Textile Conservation is a new research initiative, promoting investigation and research in the areas of textile conservation and costume history. Through the generous support of Dr. Isabel Bader, the Fellowship links two of the University’s most unique resources: the Queen’s University Collection of Canadian Dress at the Art Centre, which comprises over 2000 articles of fashion from the early 1800s to the 1970s, and the Master of Art Conservation Program, which offers Canada’s only graduate degree in conservation theory and treatment.

 

As the Isabel Bader Research Fellow in Textile Conservation at Queen’s University, commencing January 2011, Florio will research public perception of conservation treatment. Her project, “Textile Conservation and the Museum Public,” will focus on conservation practices as part of the museum experience: how costume treatments are received and interpreted in exhibitions and to what extent modern aesthetic expectations affect the level of conservation intervention. During her residency, Florio will work closely with the Queen’s University Collection of Canadian Dress at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and share her professional and academic expertise with Master of Art Conservation students.

 

A graduate of the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Florence and the Palazzo Spinelli Institute of Art and Conservation in Florence, Caterina Florio has held conservation internships in Poland, Italy and Malta. She brings a wealth of conservation experience to the Fellowship position, having worked for a number of museums, public archives and university collections in Canada and abroad – including the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto; Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto; Archives of Ontario, Toronto; San Jacopo in Campo Corbolini Museum, Florence; and the University of Florence.

Bio: Al Parrish grew up singing in choirs and playing in the high school band. A friend convinced him to join an after-school rock band, the first of many bands in many genres. In 1989, Al entered the world of folk/roots music when he and three friends created Brean Derg Muc, a Toronto-based, pseudo-Irish band that took the Ontario folk festival scene by storm during two years of brilliant success.

Over the next couple of years, Al freelanced in Ontario and the Maritimes with The Barnstormers, David Stone, October Browne, Kirk Elliot, Aaron Solomon, Anne Lederman, Dave MacIsaac, Jamie Snider and many others.

In 1994, Al began a 17-year career with the soon-to-be-legendary Tanglefoot, touring Ontario and then all across Canada. In 1998 the band began playing in the US, and that summer made its UK debut. For the next 12 years, Al was on the road with Tanglefoot about 150 days a year, splitting playing dates fairly evenly among Canada, the US and the UK. Tanglefoot won Crossroads Band of the Year (2000), Best of Bound for Glory (2003) and, at the 2007 CFMA, Best Vocal Group. In December 2009, the band played its final shows and disbanded.

Since then Al has been recording a solo CD, writing a memoire and a novel, recording voice-overs for commercial television and radio, video games and movies. Most recently Al has launched his solo musical performance career with several shows in the last couple of months, including an opening set for Celtic rockers Coole Park at their Toronto CD release, a concert for the Vital Spark Folk Club, and an appearance at the Jamland Festival.

Felting Workshops with Andrea Graham September 26- Felted Vessels: A great one day class for everyone. Beginner felters can create a simple 3D shape using a flat resist techinique. More experienced felters may choose to incorporate multiple resists, cut-aways or exciting surface design. A perfect warm-up class for the following bags workshop. $80 + $20 materials fee (+13% hst). Hours: 9-4 (brown bag lunch-coffee/tea and snacks provided) October 16th-17th- Felted Bags:A 2 day bags class for those with wet felting experience. Pushing Boundaries: A Summer Arts Camp will take place August 3-6 at Sydenham Street United Church. Children (8-11) and youth (12-16) will experience West-African drumming and dancing with internationally recognized percussionist and educator Kathy Armstrong. Other activities and professional facilitators will include singing (Andy Rush, Jennifer Moir, Marie Anderson), art-making (Alice VanderVennen) and generally having fun (everyone!).
